San Francisco and The Bay Area

Attractions and Recommendations

Region San Francisco and The Bay Area Country USA Destination:

Description | Climate | Attractions | Recommendations

Alcatraz Island - Out in the middle of the San Francisco Bay, the island of Alcatraz is a world unto itself. Isolation, one of the constants of island life for any inhabitant - soldier, guard, prisoner, Indian, bird or plant - is a recurrent theme in the unfolding history of Alcatraz.

Chinatown - No neighborhood is as storied or picturesque as Chinatown. Get past the sidewalk trinket shops and you’ll find that for quality art, sturdy kitchenware, and other household items, it’s a place for bargains. Mostly, though, Chinatown is a place to wander amid the din and atmosphere of one of the country’s most historic and, as a hub of West Coast immigration from across the Pacific, important areas.

Fisherman's Wharf - Fisherman's Wharf has parks and piers, museums and music, shops and ships, drunks and debutantes, cafes and carryouts.

Golden Gate Park - Fine museums. Sun-sprinkled gardens. A Children's Park equipped with a carousel, plus plenty of outdoor action. There's golf and tennis, horseback riding, power-walking and roller blading. Where else could you have so much fun in one day? Head for Golden Gate Park, just the place to meet locals in the fog or under the sun.

Union Square - When San Franciscans say they are going shopping "downtown," they mean that they are going to the shops on and near Union Square. Although most San Francisco neighborhoods have their own shopping districts, some of them quite extensive, there is nothing like shopping "downtown."

Exploratorium - The Museum of science, art and human perception.

San Francisco Museum of Modern Art - One of the world's most innovative museums of modern and contemporary art.

Golden Gate Bridge - Acclaimed as one of the world's most beautiful bridges, there are many different elements to the Golden Gate Bridge which make it unique.  With its tremendous towers, sweeping cables and great span, the Bridge is a sensory beauty featuring color, sound and light.

North Beach - San Francisco's historically Italian section remains a vibrant and lively neighborhood, filled with unusual shops, quaint cafes and delicious restaurants.

Nob Hill - you'll find Nob Hill by heading up California St. until you reach Mason Street, and two of San Francisco's most famous landmarks, The Fairmont Hotel and The Mark Hopkins. Take the elevator to the Top Of The Mark for a cool-down drink, gaze at the City's enviable panorama.
